The Hayfield girls basketball team had its season come to an end in the Section 2AA semifinals after it lost to Blue Earth 40-29 in Mankato Monday.
The No. 3 seeded Vikings (19-9 overall) trailed throughout as they got off to a slow start. Hayfield trailed 24-17 at the break and got as close as five in the second half.
“They played very good defense and got out on us,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said.
Over half of No. 1 Blue Earth’s points came from the arc as Blue Earth (17-4 overall) knocked down seven threes.
“We just didn’t get out and make it a tough shot for them,” Kindschy said.
The Vikings will graduate five seniors — including 1,000-point scorers Kiley Severson and Jordyn Krekling, who scored eight in her last game for Hayfield.
“We’re losing some good seniors and that hurts. But we won’t feel sorry for ourselves,” Kindschy said. “We’ve got some good players coming back and next year will be interesting.”
Hayfield scoring: Jordyn Krekling, 8; Kayla Garness, 7; Molly Streightiff, 6; Beth Felten, 4; Abbie Pollock, 4; free throws: 75 percent (3-for-4)
