A pair of freshmen pitchers picked up their first career wins for the Riverland baseball team as it beat Montgomery-Rockville 13-3 and knocked off the Ontario Blue Jays 6-0 in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Tuesday.

Freshman Tyler Jones, who is from Rapid City, just missed a no-hitter in the win over the Blue Jays when he allowed a bloop single in the the seventh. Jones struck out 10 in the win.

“He pitched very well and his slider was dirty,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “It was a much better outing than his debut (a loss).”

Freshman Brad Winkelman, who is also from Rapid City, made his debut in the win over Montgomery-Rockville and he scattered five hits in five innings.

Koenigs is pleased with how RCC (4-1 overall) has played so far.

“It was a pretty good day, but we’re still making some mistakes,” he said. “We need to improve every time we come out.”
