Rockets sweep Austin softball team

The Packers finished with just one run and seven hits in 14 innings of play in a softball doubleheader against Rochester John Marshall in Todd Park Friday.

The Rockets (8-9 overall) won the opener 4-1 and took the nightcap 5-0.

Austin (3-12 overall, 2-10 Big Nine) scored one in the second inning of the first game when Bri Mayer hit a grounder to knock in Robin Arjes, who had doubled to center field earlier in the inning and the Packers wouldn’t score again all day long.

“We just have to get our bats going,” Austin head coach Tina Strauss said. “You’ve got to hit to score and you’ve got to score more than the opponent.”

JM scored three unearned runs against Austin starter Marie Clennon in the first game and Clennon didn’t walk a hitter in 12 innings of work. Relief pitcher Jennifer Yocom struck out four and allowed just one hit in two innings.

“I thought Marie and Yocom came in and did a solid job,” Strauss said. “Marie was hitting all her spots and Yocom was solid. I don’t know what else I can ask of my pitchers.”

The Packers nearly tied the game at two in the fourth inning of the opener when Brandi Ruroden was thrown out at home on a single to center field by Clennon.

JM put made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth when Sarah Eckerman doubled in a run and scored on an Austin throwing error.

The first game sw the Packers make some strong plays as Sara Sundberg threw out JM runners at third and home from center field.

The Rockets held Austin to just three hits in the nightcap.
