An Austin man faces three misdemeanor driving offenses for apparently taking his father’s car and driving it into a tree near Dreisner Park on Monday.
Arturo Morales-Ceras, 22, was charged Wednesday with one count each of driving without a valid license, careless driving and failing to stay at the scene of an accident. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 12.
According to a police report, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. Police found a Pontiac Grand Prix that had gone off the road near Eighth Street Southeast and Oakland, striking a park sign and smashing into a tree in the process.
However, no one was found in or around the car, and a search of the area was unsuccessful. While waiting for the car to be towed, police spoke with a 52-year-old man who claimed that his son, Morales-Ceras, was likely responsible.
The man said he likely fell asleep at home, which is when his son took the Grand Prix, the report states. Records indicate that the vehicle does in fact belong to the 52-year-old man.
No injuries were reported in the case.
