Goldie Austin Hoopman, 97, longtime resident of Austin, died on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Harmony Care Center, Harmony, Minn. where she had been a resident for the past few months due to medical issues.
Goldie Austin was born on Nov. 8, 1913, in York Township, Fillmore County, Minn., the second of a set of twins born to Ole Austin and Bertha Hovey Austin.
On May 5, 1932, Goldie married Orrin Cornelius Hoopman. Orrin and Goldie lived for a number of years in the Cherry Grove, Minn. area before moving to Austin in 1947. While in Cherry Grove she owned and operated Goldie’s Grocery where she was known by all for her kindness and giving personality. Together she and Orrin raised four children. Goldie was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin for many years. She enjoyed working in the kitchen there and belonged to Naomi Circle. Goldie enjoyed baking and making quilts for family and friends.
Survivors include three children, Bernis Hoopman Finke (John) of Cherry Grove, Minn., Terrel Austin Hoopman (Kathleen) of Sturgeon Lake, Minn., and Timothy Lee Hoopman (Carole) of River Falls, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters in addition to two brothers who died in infancy; her husband, Orrin in 2001; one son, Delbert Orrin Hoopman; and one granddaughter.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, June 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin. A memorial service celebrating Goldie’s life will be held on Friday, June 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Cherry Grove, Minn., followed by a private family burial in the Cherry Grove Cemetery.
