An abnormally steamy May has ushered in an early summer, and in Lyle, folks are already itching for January.
The fifth annual Halfway to January Cancer Bash takes place Saturday at the American Legion Post No. 105, 112 Grove Street, Lyle, Minn.
A bake sale is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m.; a silent auction will be held from 4 to 10 p.m.; a taco and nacho bar will be available from 5 to 10 p.m.; and karaoke will take place from 9 to 11 p.m. A live auction will also take place sometime between 10 and 11 p.m.
The auctions will include a one-night stay at the Holiday Inn of Austin, a basket of SPAM products, a hand-crafted shepherd’s hook garden stake and dozens of other items.
If enough funds are raised during karaoke, said organizer Tracy Schilling, US 99.9 KAUS Country’s Scott Soderberg will take the stage to sing.
When: 4 to 11 p.m., Saturday
Where: American Legion Post No. 105, 112 Grove Street Lyle, Minn.
Details: Bake sale, silent auction, karaoke, taco and nacho bar
Proceeds are given to the Lyle Area Cancer Telethon Auction, whose organizers distribute funds between cancer research organizations such as the University of Minnesota, the Mayo Clinic and the Hormel Institute.
Schilling said they do not have a specific monetary goal for the fundraiser.
“My goal is that every dollar we raise is going to help find a cure,” she said.
This is one of many smaller fundraisers that lead up to the annual winter Lyle Area Cancer Telethon Auction which, since 2004, has consistently raised a six-figure sum for cancer research.
The 2010 auction was the 31st annual and $119,000 was raised; in 2008, the fundraisers hit the million dollar grand total mark.
Schilling is a six-year breast cancer survivor herself, and said her battle motivated her to organize the first Halfway to January Cancer Bash.
“That’s why I do it,” she said. “We will find a cure.”
