Leon “Charlie” Heimer, 74, of Stacyville, Iowa, died on Friday, July 2, 2010, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, Iowa.
Charlie was born on Jan. 23, 1936, to Arthur and Martha (Mayer) Heimer in Stacyville, Iowa. He was a lifelong resident of Stacyville and member of Visitation Catholic Church. He attended Visitation Grade School through eighth grade and was proud to obtain his GED later in life.
In 1963, he became owner/operator of Charlie’s Co-op Service. His retirement after 43 years, in April of 2006, also brought a closing to the “Pepsi-break” gathering for local farmers at his office.
One of Charlie’s greatest past times was the sponsorship of various sporting teams, especially the infamous Charlie’s Angels and Charlie’s Devils softball teams. He also enjoyed his frequent trips to Las Vegas or the Iowa casinos. After his retirement a cribbage board and a deck of cards sere always in reach, waiting for a willing opponent.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irene Thome; brothers, Wilmer (Buddy), Ralph and LaVerne Heimer.
Charlie is survived by an uncle, Jerome (Joanie) Heimer; aunts, Marie Petermen and Angie Ginder; nephews, Bob (Sheri) Thome, Ken (Jan) Thome, Don (Eleonore) Thome, Doug (Jeanie) Heimer, Dave (Michelle) Heimer; nieces, Betty (Roger) Blake, Pat Adams, Deb (Dan) Lange; numerous other relatives and his card playing buddies.
Memorials may be given to Visitation’s “Access To The Future” Handicap Accessibility Project or directed to the family.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, Iowa, with Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville.
