Austin senior Quinn Yocom got a good look at a new world of baseball recently when he attended the USSSA National baseball tryout in Kissimme Fla.

Yocom, an outfielder, was selected out of 255 17-year old players across the nation to attend the camp and while there he was coached by the likes of Brian McRae, who was a 10-year MLB vet with the Royals, Cubs and Blue Jays.

“They taught you how to act like a pro and I got to compare myself to people from other states,” Yocom said.

Yocom played in a game at the camp and was three-for-three with a double while making a couple catches in the outfield. He also pitched to 12 batters, allowing two hits, and one run, while striking out five.

“I feel like I was pretty even with all of them,” Yocom said. “That means my hard work paying off and I need to keep doing it.”

Yocom hit just .280 this past spring for the Packers, but he boosted his batting average to .450 over the summer while playing for Austin Post 91.

“I just shortened up and slouched over so I could see the ball better,” Yocom said. “No I’m work on pulling the ball instead of hitting it to the opposite field all the time.”

Yocom, who is busy practicing with the Austin football team, hasn’t been looking at colleges too seriously yet, but he is hoping to play college baseball.
