Matchbox Theatre hits Austin

For the first time in its 30 year history, the Matchbox Children’s Theatre will perform during the summer and in an outdoor setting.
The children’s theater opens “William’s Widow” tonight with an outdoor performance at Bandshell Park.
According to Madelin Howard, a director for the program, the move was part of an effort to give children something to do in late August when there are
few activities.
“William’s Window” tells the tale of playing children who encounter fairies that bring select parts of William Shakespeare’s works to life. The sections of Shakespeare have been adjusted to be understandable to modern children and are set in different time periods, including the 1950s and the Wild West.
“What’s fun is the play makes Shakespeare understandable to children, which is hard to do,” Howard said.
Performances are set for tonight and Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Bandshell Park. The play is free of charge. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for seating.
