A 16-year-old Austin boy died Thursday morning after jumping from a moving vehicle the night before in the southwest part of town.
At this time, the Austin Police Department is not identifying the young male by name.
According to a police report, the teenager’s mother, 50-year-old Dereen Ernst, was driving southbound on 24th Street Southwest near Fifth Avenue Southwest when her son jumped from the backseat.
Police and ambulance responded at around 9:50 p.m. to find the boy lying on the side of the street. He was rushed to the Austin Medical Center and later airlifted to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
The specific cause of death is still being investigated.
Police chief Brian Krueger said his department feels there was “absolutely” no foul play involved on the part of the boy’s mother or her 13-year-old daughter, who was also in the vehicle at the time. Krueger said the woman was driving 30 mph, which is the speed limit in the area, at the time of the incident.
The police report does not indicate that the young male had any medical or mental conditions, and it is unknown why he jumped from the vehicle.
