The Southland football team overcame some old problems and rallied to beat Chatfield (2-3 overall) 27-6 in Adams Friday.
A week after committing five turnovers in a loss to Lewiston/Altura, the Rebels (4-1 overall) started the game with a fumble that put Chatfield up 6-0 just a minute into the game and Southland later had a punt blocked in the first half.
“We were in a dog fight right out of the get go and we gave up way too many rushing yards (335) tonight,” Southland head coach Shawn Kennedy said.
After quarterback Sam Noterman threw an interception deep in Chatfield territory, the Rebels finally got it going to close the first half.
Grant Hegge scored on a 14-yard run to make it 7-6 with six minutes left in the half and Hegge scored again to make it 14-6 on a 10-yard catch from Noterman.
Hegge rushed for 97 yards while replacing Tyler Kressin, who was injured early in the game.
“Grant stepped in there and did phenomenal and the line did good,” Kennedy said.
Alan May and Lee Kloeckner both picked off passes on defense for the Rebels and Mike Goergen recovered a fumble.
