Changes made to cardboard recycling drop site

Recycling cardboard may require more work for Austin businesses — at least for now.
Waste Management customers who regularly drop off commercial grade cardboard at Austin’s dump on the east side of town now have to travel to Clark’s Grove to get the job done.
“Waste Management is not changing its recycling collection for our commercial customers,” said Julie Ketchum, government affairs manager for Waste Management in Minnesota. “We’re simply moving the operation from Austin to Clark’s Grove.”
The main reason behind the switch in operations is space, according to Ketchum.
“It’s likely because of the increase in recyclable (product) and need for space at that particular site,” she said.
The current Waste Management site in Austin is located on the outskirts of the Austin Municipal Airport.
Officials with Waste Management in Minnesota say they are working with the City of Austin to set-up a commercial cardboard drop site in Austin, though no specifics were given by the company.
“We are working with local officials to find another drop-off location within the city of Austin,” Ketchum said.
Austin City Engineer Jon Erichson said he has been working with Waste Management in regard to its transfer station east of Austin, but has not discussed a site for cardboard drop off. Jeff Weaver of the Austin Recycling Center was also unaware of any possible cardboard drop sites in the Austin area.
Regular cardboard pick-up for Waste Management customers is not changing.
