The Austin wrestling team had a tough start to its season as it fell to Owatonna 73-0 in Ove Berven Gym Thursday.

While the Packers (0-1 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) feature quite a few first time wrestlers, the Huskies, who are ranked No. 3 in Class ‘AAA’, put out eight seniors and four wrestlers that are ranked in the top-10 for Class ‘AAA’.

“It wasn’t a good situation for our kids,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “We’ve got our youngest team in quite some time against a veteran team. It was kind of a perfect storm and you could see it coming on paper.”

The closest match of the night was the heavyweight match as Austin senior Thomas Herrera led Owatonna’s Josh Woodrich 2-1 after starting the third period with a reversal.

But Woodrich escaped with 40 seconds left in the match and he took Herrera down with 10 seconds left to get the 4-2 win.

The match reminded Kinney of a regular season match between Herrera and Woodrich last year that Herrera won.

“Last year Woodrich took a shot at the end and slipped and Thomas ended up winning,” Kinney said. “This time Thomas was the more aggressive wrestler and he ended up losing at the end. It was an eerily similar match.”

The Huskies racked up eight pins in the win, and Kinney said he saw some things his team can work on.

“I’m not discouraged and I think we’ve got potential to be a good team down the line,” Kinney said. “We just have to put in work. These kids have been very receptive to teaching.”
