An Austin man could be charged with filing a false police report after allegedly rolling his car, leaving the scene and later telling police the vehicle had been stolen.
Theodore Caballero, 24, reported his white 1995 Jeep stolen around 11:30 p.m. Monday night. The vehicle was later found on I-90 near the 168 mile marker in Freeborn County.
Initially, Caballero told police he had gotten home between 9:30 and 10 a.m. but did not realize his car was missing until around 10 p.m. He told police he waited just over an hour to report the vehicle as stolen.
After some questioning, Caballero admitted to police that he had crashed his vehicle and didn’t have insurance so he reported the Jeep stolen instead.
A state trooper cited the man for driving without insurance and the case is being forwarded to the county attorney for potential charges on filing a false police report.
