EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — A northwestern Wisconsin couple has been sentenced for embezzling from their disabled son who was wounded while serving in Iraq.
Michael and Lori Nault pleaded guilty to embezzlement in Eau Claire County Tuesday. Michael Nault was sentenced to seven months in jail — or five months if he does 480 hours of community service. Lori Nault was sentenced to five months in jail or 480 hours of community service. She’s their son’s primary caregiver.
Prosecutors say the couple embezzled as much as $167,000 from their son’s bank accounts, which were under guardianship of a Minneapolis company.
Authorities say the parents spent $53,000 of their son’s money on casino trips. The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram says Shane Nault suffered brain injuries when an IED exploded in Baghdad in 2007.
