The Riverland women’s basketball team found its shooting stroke as it beat Gustavus JV 76-58 in Riverland Gym Wednesday.

After a slow start, Krista Viehauser hit a three from the top of the key to make it 16-10 with 12:11 and the Blue Devils (10-4 overall) ended up with a 14-2 run that saw them build a double-digit lead that they held on to for the rest of the night.

Viehauser, a sophomore from Austin, finished with 34 points, three assists and six rebounds, while hitting four of her five three-point attempts against a Gusties team that RCC only beat by one earlier in the season.

“It seemed really easy in this game, a lot easier than the last one for sure,” Viehauser said. “It helped a lot to have seen them before and we kind of knew what to expect. We picked it up a lot more in this one.”

RCC held Gustavus to 18 percent shooting in the first half, which helped them build up their lead. The Blue Devils hit nine threes while shooting 64 percent from the arc.

“Gustavus is a nice team and I think they can shoot better than they did tonight,” RCC head coach Suzy Hebrink said. “I thought we played good defense and everybody is definitely getting better.”

Gustavus scored the first five points of the second half to get within 39-27 with 18:30 left in the game but Joni Lillo knocked down a free throw and a three-pointer to put RCC back in control.

“Against a tough team like this there is no comfortable lead because they have players who can score from the inside and outside,” Hebrink said.

Krissy Schemmel gave the Blue Devils an early lift as she hit both of her threes in the first half and she finished with 12 points, four assists and three steals.
