Veterans not done with memorial

Although the Veteran’s Memorial Committee accomplished much in 2010, there’s still a lot of work to be done in 2011.

About 300 black stone pavers need to be sold to complete the memorial and set up a perpetual maintenance fund, according to Norm Hecimovich, the committee’s chairman.

“It’s very important,” Hecimovich said. “As a community we want the best that we can have.”

The Veteran’s Memorial Committee sold about 690 pavers last year as part of their efforts to complete the Mower County Veterans’ Memorial in September. The memorial, featuring a new bronze statue of one soldier helping another, was dedicated during a Sept. 11 ceremony.

Thanks to a $7,200 donation from an anonymous donor, the committee installed six flagpoles with flags representing the six branches of the armed services in early November.

In order to keep the memorial in good condition, the committee wants to set up a perpetual endowment fund to take care of it. In addition, new repairs need to be made after a memorial piece, a statue resembling a map of the globe, was damaged in the fall. The committee is looking to replace it with a new statue, which could include a life-size eagle looking upon the central bronze statue.

“This way, looking at our veterans memorial would be quite attractive,” Hecimovich said.
