Austin schools use up snow days

It’s not even March yet and Austin Public Schools has run out of snow days.
While district officials aren’t yet concerned about adding extra days, unruly weather and abnormal snowfalls have forced the district to shut down schools twice this school year, which means the two snow days normally built into the school calendar have been used up.
If district officials call off school again, the Austin School Board would have to decide whether to make up the extra time by taking away a built-in holiday from the calendar or possibly adding extra days, said David Krenz, the district’s superintendent.
“We don’t have to, but it would be up to the school board,” he said.
School districts must have a certain number of hours in the classroom every year in order to receive state funding. Those hours add up to about 160 school days, according to Krenz. Since district officials budget about 180 school days into its calendar, there’s no chance shutting down school an extra day or two would affect district funding.
Staying open an extra day wouldn’t become a financial problem either, according to Mark Stotts, the district’s finance and operations director. District officials would balance costs using the amount of money saved from snow day closures.
The problem with adding extra days lies with district employee contracts, as the district reserves the right to make employees make up the first two snow days. Any more snow days and district officials would face contract-related issues, according to Krenz.
