LEROY — The No. 7 seeded LeRoy/Ostrander girls basketball team clamped down on defense and made just enough plays to keep its season alive against No. 10 Lanesboro Tuesday.

The Cardinals overcame 30 turnovers and several missed lay-ups to hang on and beat Lanesboro 36-31 in a Subsection 1A East Division first round game.

Points were hard to come by for both teams, but L/O freshman Becca Bunne led the way in the second half as she scored 11 of her team’s 17 second half points —including two free throws to ice the game with six seconds left.

Bunne, who also had seven rebounds, bounced back from a slow first half that saw her go scoreless.

“This was my first playoff game but nerves weren’t a factor. I get a little flustered sometimes when I struggle,” Bunne said.

The Cardinals (8-18 overall) led through the entire second half, but Lanesboro’s Paige Hungerholt drilled two threes in a 20-second span to bring the Burros within 33-31 with 25 seconds left in the game.

L/O head coach Aaron Hungerholt calmly called a timeout and pointed to the officials that Paige Hungerholt was getting free on moving screens. Becca Bunne hit a free throw to make it 34-31 and with seven seconds left Paige Hungerholt hit another three, but this one was called off due to a moving screen that was called.

“I’d been talking to him a little bit all night,” Aaron Hungerholt said. “But at the end it was getting to a point where they’d get a body on us and just slide with us. He said he would watch it and I thought that was a good call (at the end).”

L/O junior forward Chanda Riedemann, who finished with six points, seven steals and two blocks, had to watch the last minute and a half unfold from the bench as she fouled out.

“It was very stressful watching when I had to sit,” she said. “Getting to win and move on is exciting, nobody saw it coming and everyone kind of doubted us at the beginning. We came back and showed them who’s boss.”

Each team struggled to score in the first eight minutes of the game, but Krista Bunne ignited L/O’s offense with two first half threes.

L/O led 15-6 after a Jessica Jennings three but the Burros (6-20 overall) pulled to within 17-14 when Paige Hungerholt and Johanna Bearson hit back-to-back threes late in the first half.

Riedemann hit a short jumper with two seconds left in the half to make it 19-14.

Aaron Hungerholt said Becca Bunne’s offense gave the team a huge lift and he’s hoping she improves as her high school career continues.

“Becca has shown flashes this year where she just turns it on and takes games over,” he said. “Being a freshman, she’s just so inconsistent right now, but she gives us big plays at big times and I know she can do it. As she gets older, she’s going to keep getting better and better.”

The Cardinals will play at No. 2 Fillmore Central (18-7 overall) Friday at 7 p.m. The Falcons beat L/O 65-17 Feb. 12.
