Matt Peterson/matt.peterson@austindailyherald.com Dick and Nancy Knowlton were recognized Monday for their hand in planning the Hormel Historic Home’s atrium. Many from Hormel say Dick saved the atrium with his architectural ideas by envisioning what it is today.

Members of Hormel gathered Monday evening to honor Dick and Nancy Knowlton for their support of the Hormel Historic Home and the Austin Community.

The former Hormel Foods Corp. CEO is recognized by many as a crafty architect who was an integral part of the HHH’s expansion and renovation project in 2008.

The Knowltons donated $100,000 and the couple prompted Hormel to donate an additional $1 million.

Dick also offered ideas on how to change the atrium. Some say he “saved” the atrium, as its layout today depicts his plans.

“Architecture is my hobby,” Dick said.

He and others remember how he squeezed a bathroom into a small space in his home when nobody thought it was possible.

For their efforts at Hormel and around Austin, a picture of the Knowltons and a plaque will forever hang in the George Room of the HHH.
