Woodson could offer year-round classes for future Sumner students

Sumner Elementary School may not be alone in changing to a 45/15 schedule.

Austin Public School officials offered several solutions Monday that weren’t previously in place during a presentation on a possible switch to an alternative calendar, or a 45/15 schedule.

If the school board allows Sumner to switch to the 45/15 schedule, Woodson Kindergarten Center would create three or four sections of kindergarten that would run on the same schedule. Those kindergartners would presumably attend Sumner the following year.

“We’d like our programming all here, and we’d hate to see it disjointed,” said Woodson Principal Jean McDermott. Since Woodson staff volunteered to create 45/15 sections for students who would attend Sumner, parents with kindergarten and elementary students wouldn’t have to deal with shifting schedules.

“It’s awesome,” said Sumner Principal Sheila Berger. “That reinforces and supports what we’re hoping to do.”

Berger also told the audience Monday that Sumner staff were pursuing grants and other possible funding for activities during student breaks, or intersession.
