Woodson could offer year-round classes for future Sumner students

A 45/15 schedule means students would attend school for 45 school days, or about nine weeks, and then go on break for about 15 school days, or about three weeks. Students would have the same amount of vacation days as other Austin kids, including a shorter summer vacation. Sumner would have to start school earlier than other schools while ending the school year when the rest of the district does. This is to make sure moving students through the district goes smoothly, according to Berger.

Yet district officials aren’t changing the open enrollment process for residents who want to put their children into Sumner next year. The current policy in place makes parents provide their own transportation for students who want to open enroll. Due to budget constraints, district officials decided to leave that policy in place.

Monday’s meeting was sparsely attended compared to Sumner’s parent meetings in January. Of the residents in attendance, almost all were school employees or Sumner parents who either didn’t attend the first meeting or wanted to know if there was more information.

Mick and Bev O’Connor, who were present at the first meeting, are still for the proposed switch because of the positive effects on families they’ve heard about.

“You’ve got a 45 day class schedule and a 15 day break,” Mick said. “It breaks the year up a lot better.”

Other parents seem resigned to the switch.

“I think the decision’s already made,” said Matt Wyse.

The third and final community meeting will take place at noon Feb. 10 in Sumner’s auditorium. The meetings are, in part, to inform the community of the staff’s proposal. At the same time, district officials are fulfilling state requirements which mandate that any district looking to start school before Labor Day must hold three public meetings to get community feedback, according to John Alberts, the district’s director of educational services.
