HOLLANDALE —An area school is closed today after more than a quarter of its students became ill.
Flu-like symptoms including high fever, coughing, chest congestion and some occurrences of strep caused 19 of 70 students, and some staff, at Hollandale Christian School to be absent Tuesday. Because of this the school will be closed today and tomorrow to give students and staff a chance to get better.
School principal, Lisa Vos, said the school had been sending out notes to parents in the last weeks for what symptoms to look for and telling parents that students need to be home for at least 24 hours before coming back to school.
“We did a thorough cleaning of desks, chairs, counters, doorknobs,” Vos said.
Basically anything students touched including bathroom surfaces and lunchroom areas were disinfected. Vos said the school plans to be open Friday.
A musical scheduled for Friday has been postponed for a week.
