Paramount to groove with ‘Six Mile Grove’

There’s going to be some boot stomping, hollering and a general good time at the Paramount Theatre Friday night.
Six Mile Grove and Dana Cooper will perform at the Paramount for a free concert at 7 p.m. Friday, as part of Six Mile Grove’s “Americana Showcase.” This isn’t just any Six Mile Grove show, however, as they’ll be reintroducing Cooper to Minnesota.
“We’re bringing in the inspiration for the showcase,” said Brandon Sampson of SMG.
It was during the Americana Music Association’s 2006 conference that the band first heard Cooper, who’s been playing since 1973. After watching him in action, the band was hooked.
“We didn’t really know what to call it,” Sampson said of SMG’s musical styling. “We went to this thing and we immediately had a home. It was like a light switch turning on, and we said, ‘Hey! This is what we were playing.’”
Since then, SMG’s Americana Showcases have toured around the state and across the Midwest, but Friday’s show with Cooper will be special. KSMQ will be recording the concert, the first time an SMG concert’s been recorded by public television.
Sampson and SMG have bigger goals in mind for the “Americana Showcase,” however. The band hopes to take the showcase across the country to small towns, providing free entertainment with the alternative country and bluegrass rock sound SMG has done since 1997.
“We’re going to bring the music to the people in small towns,” Sampson said. “I think that’s going to happen a lot more now.”
“Americana Showcase,” is made possible through a grant by the Minnesota Arts and Heritage Cultural Fund. The event is free and open to the public.
