Herbert Ferris

Herbert Marshall Ferris, age 93 of Austin died Thursday morning, April 28, 2011, at Pathstone Living in Mankato.

Herbert was born Jan. 29, 1918, to Leslie and Myrtle (Kumlin) Ferris in Austin where he grew up and graduated from high school. Herb began his career as an electronics technician in 1934 at the age of 16. In 1936 he was co-owner of Hanna and Ferris Radio Company.

He married Melba Klappal on Sept. 18, 1940, at the YWCA in Austin. Herb and Melba owned and operated Ferris TV and Stereo for many years, retiring in 1991.

A member of ARRL, Herb enjoyed ham radio communications and received several awards for his search and rescue work during aircraft tragedies utilizing his ham radio communication skills. He was an accomplished photographer, avid Canadian fisherman and skilled pilot. Herb was also recognized in 1949 for the development of a pre-amplifier that brought television programs from the KSTP-TV tower in the Twin Cities down to southern Minnesota. Although a busy businessman he found time to volunteer at St Mark’s Nursing Home for over 40 years.

After moving to Mankato in February, Herb continued to make an effort to visit with others and formed many friends during his short stay at Pathstone Living.

Survivors include a son: Marshall (Margaret) Ferris, Austin; daughter: Rosemary (Gene) Brunmeier, Mankato; seven grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Melba in August, 2007.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel of Austin with Pastor Myrwood Bagne officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
