Laundry stood out in Austin
Published 5:00 pm Saturday, April 16, 2011
We continue this week with “Austin’s Industries” from the 1935 “Progressive Austin” booklet published by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
“The Johnson Laundry Co., operating at Austin, Albert Lea, Mankato, Minn., and Spencer, Iowa, is one of Austin’s worth while industries. All the latest machinery and methods are used and the quality of the work turned out is a constant advertisement for this enterprising firm.
The Austin Button Co. was established in 1915 as a service business for covering buttons, hemstitching and dress plaiting for the dry goods stores. This business through it connections has broadened now to include the wholesale of dry goods and notions. By prompt service and business methods they are enjoying an ever-increasing business in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.
The Tri-State Telephone and Telegraph Co. are housed in their own building, located on the corner of Mill and St. Paul streets, of red face brick construction, two stories in height with a three-car garage in the rear and parking space for six cars. Number of employees, 20; with a pay-roll of approximately $16,000.00 a year. Fifty-one lines serve 335 rural subscribers; 33 toll lines provide adequate facilities for long distance service with approximately 350 to 400 long distance calls being made each day. Both Local and Rural are automatic. City stations number over 2450.
The Maple Dale Hatchery is probably one of the most outstanding hatcheries of the northwest. With a capacity for 416,000 eggs at a full setting, they can fill orders no matter how large. ‘Honest Baby Chicks at Honest Prices’ has ever been their motto. The thousands of orders that roll in from every state in the Union is sufficient evidence that they have the confidence of their many customers.”
Next week, our look at 1935 industry continues with R. H. Gray Body Co., Kinsman Greenhouses and others.
