Some good news

Here’s a thumbs-up to the teachers and students at Neveln School, who staged a “penny war” to raise funds for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last month. The school’s student council had already planned to hold a fund-raiser for Relay for Life, itself a worthy cause. But when the tsunami and earthquake hit, they changed course and put their efforts into raising funds for the victims. In all, the students raised $1,378.28 — most of it in pennies.
Neveln’s generosity wasn’t the only news worth of recognition last week:
n The Boy Scouts, along with many community members, recognized Tom Day for his years of effort on behalf of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. To remain consistently involved as a volunteer in an activity so worthy, and so beneficial to young people, is deserving of the Super Scouter award that Day received.
n Austin residents Phil Bundy and Deb Kiefer were inducted into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame recently, an honor they each clearly deserved for their personal bowling skills and service to other bowlers. Bundy, who has bowled for 45 years, has promoted the sport in many ways, from writing a bowling column to recruiting bowlers for league play. Kiefer helped run the Inter-City League for years, and made many other contributions to the sport.
n A surge of community support pushed Austin into fourth place in a nationally competition to show interest in Google’s community high-speed internet project. More than 18 percent of Austin residents signaled their support for the project via Facebook — that’s a lot of support.
Good things — some big, some small, but all worthy of note — are going on every week in our community.
