Virgil Stone

Virgil Oliver Stone, age 87 of Austin, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Virgil was born July 8, 1923, to Alvin Fred and Clara Laraine (Boostrom) Stone in Isanti, Minn. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1941 and moved to Austin to work at Geo. A. Hormel & Co.

He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on Jan. 28, 1946. Stationed in Japan, he was honorably discharged April 3, 1947. He married Viola Doreen Thompson on July 1, 1950, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin.

Virgil also worked as a part-time farm laborer for many years. Viola died on Jan. 20, 1999. A member Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where he had served as a trustee, Virgil belonged to P-9 and enjoyed trout fishing, camping and caring for his yard.

Survivors include two sons: James (Rebecca) Stone, Plano, Texas; Jon (Milinda) Stone, Little Canada; two daughters: Ruth Ann (Thomas) Alexander, Canton; Jane (Charles) Mayzlik, Heath, Ohio; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister: Roselyn Erickson, Cambridge; special friend: Orlie Grant, Austin as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Viola D. Stone on Jan. 20, 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Rev. Brian Krueger, officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin with military rites by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com
