NORTHWOOD, Iowa — A 7-year-old child was struck and killed by a car this morning as she walked across the street to board a Northwood-Kensett school bus.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the bus stopped facing north near the girl’s driveway on Raven Avenue just north of 430th Street around 7:45 a.m. Lights were flashing on the bus and the stop arm was extended when a vehicle traveling south failed to stop and then struck the girl.
The driver did not stop at the scene but was found by Worth County Sheriff’s Office deputies about two miles away.
The name of the child is expected to be released later today, pending notification of family members.
A spokeswoman for the Iowa State Patrol said there were other children on the bus, and the incident is under investigation.
Northwood-Kensett Community Schools Superintendent Thomas Nugent said the district is working in collaboration with law enforcement and awaited their go-ahead before releasing any other information.
