Eastside Dollar fills local niche

Austin will have a second chance at some new and used treasures.
Eastside Dollar and Consignment, 205 11th St. NE, opened April 27 to fill a unique void in Austin, owner Jim Baldus said.
Baldus converted the building, which housed Eastside Dollar and Video, from a dollar and video store to a dollar and consignment business. Baldus said inventory from the dollar store was sitting unused in the building since that business closed over a year ago, so when discussions began about opening a consignment shop, he sprang at the chance.
Baldus said two other consignment businesses were interested in the property, including the now closed Better Than New, so when both passed, he was ready.
“We had all the dollar store stuff over there already,” Baldus said.
Eastside Dollar and Consignment specializes in larger consignment items, including furniture and appliances.
Manager Sue Ryks, who worked as a department manager at Kmart in Austin for 25 years, said she is excited to get back into the retail business.
“I like the interaction with customers, and the consignment part interested me,” she said.
Eastside is open Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Baldus also owns Jim’s Supervalu Foods and Star Liquor, both in Austin.
