ANOKA, Minn. (AP) — A 25-year-old Coon Rapids man whose baby daughter is in the hospital with a brain injury is charged with assault and malicious punishment of a child.
Joshua Vanhoutan is being held at Anoka County Jail, with bail set at $100,000. Vanhoutan told an investigator he shook his 5-month-old daughter twice when she would not calm down after she woke up around 6:30 a.m.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports (http://bit.ly/kHUHeZ ) Mercy Hospital summoned police Wednesday to investigate a possible “shaken baby.”
According to the complaint, Vanhoutan called the baby’s mother around 10 a.m. and said it would not wake up. The mother returned from work and brought the baby to the hospital, where the girl was treated for retinal hemorrhaging and bleeding on the brain. Doctors say the injuries could be fatal.
