Austin bracing for more scorching heat

If people were complaining about how cold spring has been, they finally got what was coming to them — record heat.
“It has been a really long time since we’ve had this many 90-degree days this early in June,” said Rod Donavon, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Des Moines.
Last Friday’s temperature broke a record in Austin at 97 degrees. Monday and Tuesday of this week will also linger near record-high temperatures. Although those temps may not break the record, places farther south, such Mason City, could hit records. And the humidity will only make things worse. Heat indexes in many areas may surpass 100 degrees. NWS forecasts heat indexes as high as 103 in Austin on Tuesday.
Donavon said dew points in the 60s and 70s this week will make for very uncomfortable weather, but it shouldn’t last long. Storms are likely throughout next week and will cool things back to mid 80s and possibly 70s by the end of next week.
Donavon added the super-high humidity adds to the danger of severe storms in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. If all the moisture in the air cools quickly, the area could be in for heavy precipitation and even hail. For the next 10 days, the Midwest will enter a stormy weather pattern.
