Burnell Arthur “Barney” Johnson, 84, of Blooming Prairie, died at the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

He was born June 21, 1926, to Arthur and Esther (Peterson) Johnson in Blooming Prairie Township, Minn. After his education in Blooming Prairie, Burnell served in the Army during World War II. He married Gail Johnson June 19, 1955, at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Lemond, Minn. They farmed in the Blooming Prairie area and raised three children. A member of the Blooming Prairie Township Board for many years, as well as First Lutheran Church and the American Legion, Barney enjoyed fishing, bird watching, collecting coins, traveling and visiting over coffee.

Survivors include his wife, Gail of Blooming Prairie; two daughters, Kimberly (Allen) Senst of Rochester, Tamara (Kevin) Johnson of Blooming Prairie; son, Thomas (Pamela) Johnson of Blooming Prairie; eight grandchildren, Joshua (Desiree) Johnson of Owatonna, Jessica Johnson of Eagan, Jeana Johnson of Blooming Prairie, Jeffrey (Jessica) Senst of Rochester, Angela (Nick) Senst of Winona, granddaughter-in-law, Rebecca Johnson of Blooming Prairie, (wife of the late Derek Johnson), Melissa (Justin) Johnson of Hartland, Stacey Johnson of Blooming Prairie; six great-grandchildren, Hunter, Carter, Khloe, Brady, Caleb and baby sister; two sisters, Arlene (Lawrence) Balzer of Owatonna, Donna (Irwin) Arndt of Owatonna, one brother, Maynard (Judy) Johnson of Blooming Prairie; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer; grandson, Derek.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at First Lutheran Church with Pastors Heidi Heimgartner and Charles Leonard officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Worlein Blooming Prairie Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment is at Danish Baptist Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 52. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com. Memorials are preferred to donor’s choice.
