LOS ANGELES (AP) — A small group of demonstrators has marched to a federal courthouse in Los Angeles to demand that U.S. prosecutors bring charges against a white former San Francisco Bay area transit officer who was released from jail after serving half of a two-year sentence for fatally shooting an unarmed black man.
About 25 protesters gathered Monday at the Los Angeles County courthouse where Johannes Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and walked to the nearby U.S. District Court building.
The demonstrators say they are still seeking justice for the 22-year-old victim, Oscar Grant, who was shot in the back on New Year’s Day 2009 when Mehserle and other transit officers responded to an altercation on an Oakland train platform.
Mehserle was released early Monday morning.
