Temps set record low few weeks after high

Three weeks after Austin experienced scorching record-high temperatures, a record was set on the other end.
Thursday’s high temperature of 62 degrees broke a coolest maximum temperature for June 23, set in 1957.
“We had some very cold air, lots of clouds and some precipitation,” said Jeff Boyne, forecaster with the National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis. “The combination of those three things kept the temperature from warming up too much.”
On June 3, a record-high of 97 was set, breaking a 29-year-old record, and on June 8, temperatures reached 99, just missing that day’s high mark.
Boyne attributes the swings in temperatures to La Niña — El Niño’s counterpart — which brings high temperatures as a low pressure system enters the area, and lows as it exits.
Although La Niña ended this spring, Boyne said the area is still experiencing its affects.
“That’s what dominated much of the summer last year and early spring this year,” he said. “The atmosphere is still behaving like (La Niña) is occurring.”
Boyne said major swings in temperatures are expected to last into late summer and early fall.
