A Sabin man was arrested Friday night after a high speed chase that ended when he tried to stab a Otter Tail County sheriff’s deputy.

Shortly before 11 p.m., a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on Jacob Pierce, 24, for speeding on County Highway 9, near State Highway 34, the sheriff’s office reported. Instead of pulling over, Pierce allegedly sped up to speeds over 100 mph, leading the deputy on a chase toward Pelican Rapids. During this part of the chase, Pierce’s vehicle hit a mailbox, a stop sign and a street curb, puncturing three tires along the way.

Pierce and the pursuing deputy soon arrived in Pelican Rapids, and the city’s police joined in the chase through town. Sabin eventually drove out of the city on an eastern road, where his vehicle finally came to a stop.

As a deputy approached Pierce to arrest him, Pierce allegedly tried to stab the deputy with a folding knife, causing a small 5 to 6 inch laceration on the deputy’s leg. At this point, a Pelican Rapids police officer stunned Pierce with a taser.

Pierce was taken to jail for second degree assault, fourth degree assault, fleeing law enforcement in a motor vehicle and fourth degree DWI.
