The Greyhounds’ trip to the Class ‘B’ state amateur baseball tournament came to an end after they lost an elimination game to the Miesville Mudhens 5-4 in Browntown Sunday.
Austin lost to Sauk Raids 2-1 in the opening round Saturday in Hutchinson.
“It was two close games, but we just got beat,” Hounds manger John Frein said. “It was a good season, but we had higher expectations.”
Matt Hanse scored the go-ahead run for Miesville in the top of the ninth, as he singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Hanse ended up scoring the deciding run on a fielder’s choice by Pat Pohl off of Austin reliever Bryan Toov.
Austin (27-13 overall) had taken a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Craig Braaten doubled in a run, Tyler Leopold reached on a fielder’s choice to score a run and Braaten scored on an error.
Leopold scored the first run of the game in the fourth on an error by the Mudhens.
Against Sauk Rapids, Austin pitcher Nels Nelson allowed two first inning runs in a 2-1 loss.
Nick Rohne threw a runner out at home to end the first inning, but the Hounds couldn’t find much offense throughout the game.
“Nels shut them down the rest of the way, but our bats didn’t come alive,” Frein said.
Joe Kroc had two singles for the Hounds, who were held to seven hits in the loss.
Dan Swift knocked in Austin’s only run in the top of the sixth when he drove in Nick Rohne with a sacrifice.
