One of two men who pleaded guilty to aiding in the stabbing of an Albert Lea man last summer was sentenced in Freeborn County District Court last week to probation and community service.

Retired Judge Gerald Wolf, filling in for a judicial vacancy in Freeborn County, sentenced Marcus Allen-Wayne Hallmark, 20, of Fridley, to five years probation and 45 hours of community service.

If Hallmark violates the probation during that five years, he could face 264 days in the Freeborn County jail. He has already spent 101 days in jail.

Hallmark pleaded guilty in October to one felony count of third-degree aiding and abetting assault, causing substantial bodily harm. A second charge of second-degree aiding and abetting assault was dismissed.

According to court records, Hallmark and co-defendant David Joshua-John Skotte, held down an Albert Lea man Aug. 8, 2010, while another man, Todd Raymond Paulson, reportedly stabbed him on Columbus Avenue near the Johnson Street railroad crossing.

Skotte pleaded guilty to the same charge as Hallmark and received a similar sentence in April. Paulson has pleaded not guilty to his alleged crime and is slated for a jury trial in October.

During the hearing this week, Hallmark was also ordered to complete a chemical assessment, to remain law-abiding, to have no contact with the victim and to follow all conditions of the probation agreement.

He was also ordered to supply a DNA sample, to obtain and maintain employment and to participate in cognitive skills training.

He has until Jan. 22 to complete his community service.

Hallmark must also pay $80 in court costs.
