Sibling rivalry quickly turned serious early Sunday morning when police responded to a domestic assault involving a brother and sister.

Austin police were called to the 400 block of Eighth Ave. SE around 2:15 a.m. Sunday morning on a report of a fight. When they arrived, 23-year-old Kristina Minnick of Osage, Iowa, was unresponsive.

A witness told police Minnick’s brother, James Minnick, 22, kicked her in the head.

Kristina Minnick was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin for her injuries. She was treated and released, Police Chief Brian Krueger said.

James Minnick, of Austin, was arrested and is being held in jail pending charges. Krueger said he could face charges for fifth-degree domestic assault, obstructing legal process and disorderly conduct — all misdemeanors.

Krueger said alcohol was a factor in the incident.
