Goergen scores 5 TDs as Rebels win big

Southland junior Mike Goergen had a chance to put his name in the school record book on homecoming night, but he chose to share the load as the Rebels ran past Lewiston/Altura (2-3 overall) 49-24 in Adams Friday.
Goergen had already logged in 107 yards and five touchdowns when he deferred to his teammate Nick Schmitz to score a touchdown late in the game.
“Mike could’ve tied the school record with six scores, but he didn’t want another touchdown,” Southland head coach Shawn Kennedy said. “He wanted somebody else to get in and that was awesome. We have a special group of young men here.”
No. 6 ranked Southland (4-0 overall, 4-0 Three Rivers) amassed 368 yards on the ground as it turned a 21-10 halftime lead into a blow-out win.
Senior running back Tyler Kressin ran for 124 yards and a score and senior Ben Wolterman stepped up big, despite rushing for just 18 yards.
“Ben wasn’t feeling well and he didn’t play in the first half,” Kennedy said. “But he stepped up as a team captain and a leader and played a strong second half for us.”
