The Austin girls cross country team finished fifth out of 24 teams and the Austin boys took 15th at the Rochester Mayo Invite Thursday.
The Packer girls finished ahead of all five other Big Nine teams at the meet.
“It was a fantastic finish for the girls,” Austin head coach Tony Einertson said.
Austin eighth grader Madison Overby notched a career best time of 15:05.9 as she finished in third and junior Haley Splinter took ninth place.
Overby ran the last mile with her shoe untied, but it didn’t slow her down.
“It didn’t seem to bother her,” Einerstson said. “Madison took third in a really strong field and Haley was sick, but is getting better and starting to hit her stride.
Nate Schawab took 30th for the Packer boys, while sophomore Andrew Baker was 32nd with a career best time. Austin freshman Caleb Asay also ran a career best time at the meet.
“Andrew had a great meet and he’s kind of stepping up for us,” Einertson said. “The young guys are starting to come around.”
