The LeRoy/Ostrander football team had to hold off a late Lyle/Pacelli rally to walk away with a 42-22 lead in LeRoy to close out the regular season Wednesday.

The Cardinals (2-6 overall, 2-6 SEC) led 36-6 in the third quarter as Lucas Roe, who finished with 166 rushing yards and six total TDs, ran for three first half scores.

“At halftime we felt like were in control,” L/O head coach Aaron Hungerholt said. “They scored quickly in the second half and they didn’t go away. Both teams played hard, but it was big for us to win at home.”

L/P’s Brandon Cotter returned a kickoff 38 yards to set up a 37-yard TD run by Garett Lester that made it 36-14 and freshman quarterback Jordan Hart, who threw for 271 yards, hit Max Brennan for a 79-yard score to make it 36-22.

“We had all the momentum in the second half and then we stopped protecting the quarterback and got rushed,” L/P head coach Reid Olson said. “We did some good things and we made some big plays, but we just got in too big of a hole early on.”

L/P (0-8 overall, 0-8 SEC) turned the ball over on its first four possessions and it finished the night with six giveaways.

With the loss, L/P’s season comes to an end and the team will graduate two seniors in Teddy Emery and Brennan.

The Cardinals will open the nine-man playoffs next Tuesday on the road.
