The Hayfield football team couldn’t make that one last stop as it lost 28-16 to Zumbrota/Mazeppa (4-2 overall, 4-2 HVL) in Hayfield Friday.

The Vikings (0-6 overall, 0-6 HVL) scored on a Cole Kruger four-yard TD run to pull within 20-16 with 5:47 left in the game, but they couldn’t hold off the Cougars.

Z/M converted a third down and three when quarterback Nathaniel Rauen broke free for a 50-yard run that set up his own 15-yard TD run that sealed the game with 2:48 left.

“It was a good game, we just couldn’t stop them in the end,” Hayfield head coach Grant Klinnert said.
