The main lodge at Jellystone Park burned down after a fire tore through it around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

The building is a total loss, including the gift shop, restaurant and laundry facilities inside, according to Sheriff Terese Amazi.

Some campers in the line of the fire and smoke were evacuated, but nobody was injured, Amazi said.

Firefighters from Dexter, Brownsdale, Grand Meadow and Rose Creek battled the blaze for six hours Sunday morning after Russell Tate, the person responsible for the building, reported the fire.

Amazi said Tate noticed the fire in the kitchen area and attempted to put it out but it grew too rapidly. Tate was unsure how the fire began and believed everything in the kitchen had been shut off, Amazi said.

When firefighters and Mower County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames, according to Dexter Fire Chief Randy Stephenson.

Stephenson said Dexter firefighters called the Brownsdale, Grand Meadow and Rose Creek Fire Departments to bring more water. Though firefighters contained the blaze to just the main lodge, Stephenson said the blaze wasn’t fully extinguished until about 10 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. The state Fire Marshal is investigating.
