ROCHESTER — The Packers didn’t have much room to work with as they mustered just 90 yards of offense in a 61-19 loss at Rochester Mayo (5-0 overall, 5-0 Big Nine) Friday.

Austin (0-5 overall, 0-4 Big Nine) had just four plays of 10 yards or more on the night as the Spartan defensive line was in the backfield early and often. Mayo racked up four sacks and recovered two Austin fumbles.

“When they’re three feet in your backfield, you really can’t do anything. That takes away everything,” Austin head coach Matt Schmit said. “They played real well and we didn’t.”

Austin’s depth was limited due to a rash of illnesses and injuries and Mayo senior receiver Zachary Rhodes had a field day in the first half as he finished with seven catches for 174 yards and four scores in the first two quarters.

Rhodes started his scoring frenzy when he caught a pass underneath on fourth and 27 and juked a couple of tacklers to score from 30 yards out to make it 14-0 Spartans with 8:10 left. His next three touchdown grabs of 76, 3 and 18 yards came in the last five minutes of the first half right after Austin’s Marcus Stoulil pulled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sean Coffey to make it a 21-7 game with 6:21 left in the first half.

Stoulil later left the game with an injury.

Coffey threw three touchdowns, including a 19-yard fade pass that sophomore Zach Wessels leaped up to catch, while getting both feet in-bounds on the right sideline as he fell to the ground.

That touchdown made it a 47-19 game with 11:11 left in the fourth and Wessels finished with 35 receiving yards.

“Sean tore up his hand, but he had a great throw. I just waited, shouldered it up and caught it,” Wessels said. “We have a young team, but we can still win some games this year and we can still be good in the years to come.”

Austin’s low point came late in the game when they committed a personal foul on Mayo kicker Ben Walvatne on an extra point that knocked Walvatne out of the game.

Schmit told his team that he was not pleased with the penalty.

“We talked about composure and that’s the biggest thing for me right now,” he said. “I’m looking over at number nineteen (Walvatne) over there and that’s inexcusable. We talked about sticking together and when things go tough, you don’t do things wrong.”

Austin will host Rochester Century (3-2 overall, 2-2 Big Nine) Friday at 7 p.m.
