The Austin Fire Department will receive more than $3,400 in 2012 for training reimbursement grants from the state fire safety account.
This year, the per-firefighter reimbursement rate is $101.85, so Austin will receive $3,462 for the year starting July 1, 2011, and ending June 30, 2012.
Fire Chief Mickey Healey said the fire department’s annual training budget is roughly $6,000, with about $3,000 coming from city funds. The rest of the funding is provided by the training reimbursement grants at the end of the fiscal year.
“It helps out tremendously that we can be reimbursed for this,” Healey said.
Healey said Austin is fortunate because it has training instructors in-house, so less money needs to be spent to bring in outside trainers.
The state funding, which comes from the fire safety account, is from a surcharge on all homeowner insurance policies and some commercial insurance policies in Minnesota.
