Farmers’ market
Last week I discussed genetically modified food and the health hazards they pose, but how do you avoid them? Although many other countries label their GM food, here in America, we don’t.
According to a recent survey, if they were labeled, 53 percent of participants said they would not eat them. Currently 60-70 percent of our food in the U.S. is genetically modified. Children’s foods are the number one GM containing products.
Many processed foods contain 90 to 100 percent GM ingredients. Most all non-organic breads and other baked goods contain GM ingredients. Most non-organic chocolate, sweets, candy and gum, for example, contain GM ingredients. Most non-organically raised animal (meat, dairy, eggs) products contain GM ingredients. These animals are typically fed a diet that is 90 percent GM. Most non-organic beverages (beer, wine, soft drinks, juices) contain GM ingredients.
The vegetables at our Farmers’ Market are grown without the use of pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Many vendors sell natural pasture raised meat and eggs. Shop healthy, shop at your local farmers’ market.
Winter market underway
Our first winter market went well. There are plenty of items still available. We have tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, winter squashes, sweet potatoes, pie pumpkins, eggs, chicken, baked goods, jams and jellies, salsa and much more. Come out and support your local, hard-working farmers.
The market is now open for our winter season, every Thursday, indoors at Oak Park Mall. Our hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. EBT and credit cards are accepted.
Here are a few tips to avoid GM food:
1. Buy organic as much as possible
2. Buy foods labeled ‘Non-GM’
3. Avoid non-organic products containing corn, soy, canola, cottonseed, peanut, alfalfa, safflower, tomatoes, zucchini, crookneck squash, sugar cane, beats, peppers and papayas.
4. Avoid GM offspring products such as high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, soy lecithin, soy protein, etc.
5. Avoid non-organic dairy products and all other commercialized animal products.
6. Grow your own food products or purchase them from local farmers, who do not use GM seeds and products in their farms.
7. Use a non-GM shopping guide.
