Multiple risk factors can increase chance of disease
Published 5:04 pm Saturday, November 5, 2011
A risk factor is anything that affects your chance of getting a disease, such as cancer.
Different cancers have different risk factors. For example, exposing skin to strong sunlight is a risk factor for skin cancer. Smoking is a risk factor for cancers of the lung, mouth, larynx (voice box), bladder, kidney, and several other organs.
Your body weight is a risk factor for cancers of the colon, breast (postmenopausal), endometrium (the lining of the uterus), kidney and esophagus. Some studies have also reported links between body weight and cancers of the gallbladder, ovaries and pancreas.
Dr. Margot Cleary leader of the Nutrition and Metabolism section at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic will be visiting the Senior Center Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 5:30 p.m. She will be talking to us about how weight impacts your risk of cancer.
To sign up for this informative class stop by the Senior Center front desk or call 433-2370 ext. 3. Walk-ins are welcome.
