Neveln School opened in 1951 and was named in memory of Austin public schools superintendent S. T. Neveln.
The school board decided to dedicate the new school, then under construction, in honor of the 14th Superintendent of Austin schools in 1949. Neveln served for 28 years, from 1921 to 1949. He resigned shortly before his death in 1949.
Samuel Thomas Neveln was born in Victor, Iowa, in 1877. After graduating from Victor High School, he attended Des Moines College, Iowa Teachers College and the University of Minnesota, earning both undergrad and graduate degrees.
He taught in a number of schools in Iowa before coming to Austin in 1921.
From his obituary, published May 2, 1949: “His long career covered the period in which the school system expanded rapidly in enrollment, in physical plant and in modern education practices. Through the years, many thousands of persons received their education under him, and came to know him personally.”
During his service, the enrollment in Austin schools grew from 1,929 to 4,881 students. Neveln also oversaw construction of the high school building which is still serving Austin students.
