Permit issue slows work at The Cedars

Construction work to add 14 memory care units at The Cedars of Austin has been slowed by building code issues.
“There are some building code issues we’re trying to get worked out,” said Community Development Director Craig Hoium, adding that it’s possible The Cedars could face fines.
One concern was that construction was moving forward without a completed building permit, Hoium confirmed.
Signs posted on the third floor read “Warning — This work is in violation of Minnesota statutes and Austin Ordinances.”
Jerry Guyette, executive director of The Cedars, said the issue shouldn’t slow the work extensively.
“They want some architectural plans that are in a little more detail than what I supplied them,” he said.
Guyette said the issue could be resolved by the end of the week. The $40,000 remodeling is expected to take about a month.
Guyette said he wants to make sure they’re in compliance before moving forward.
“The city wants some different drawings, and we’re going to get them to them,” Guyette said.
Since of the work will qualify as a change of use of the building, and Hoium said there were some other issues, including the sprinklers.
